Repair or replace?

The honest answer depends on your system.

It's the question we hear most once a Chicago summer sets in. Here's the same reasoning our technicians use in your home.

Repair usually makes sense when the system is under about 10 years old and maintained, when one part has failed (a capacitor, contactor, fan motor or a compressor issue caught early), or when weak airflow traces back to a filter, a duct restriction or a clogged condensate drain.

Replacement is worth considering when the system is past 12 to 15 years and repairs are stacking up, when the compressor or evaporator coil has failed, or when it uses a refrigerant being phased out. What the R-454B transition means for you.

What moves the cost of AC work.

We quote every job before we start. Two houses on the same block can get very different quotes, and these are the reasons why.

  • The failed partA capacitor is a small, fast fix. A compressor or coil is a major repair.
  • Refrigerant type and chargeOlder refrigerants cost more as supply tightens. A leak has to be found and fixed, not topped off.
  • System age and partsObsolete equipment can mean sourced or substituted components.
  • Sizing and efficiencyOn a replacement, the right tonnage and the SEER2 rating you choose both change the cost.
  • Ductwork and electricalOlder Chicago-area homes sometimes need duct or circuit work before a new system performs as rated.

What SEER2 means for your home.

SEER2 measures how much cooling a system delivers for the electricity it uses over a season. It replaced the old SEER rating on January 1, 2023, with a tougher test, so SEER2 numbers read a little lower for the same equipment.

  • Illinois is in the DOE's North region: new split-system central ACs must meet at least 13.4 SEER2
  • Higher is more efficient, not automatically better for Chicago's shorter cooling season
  • Sizing matters as much as the rating: an oversized system short-cycles and leaves the house humid
  • Leaky ducts and a restrictive filter cost efficiency no rating can recover

Do you offer 24/7 AC repair in Chicago?

How long does an air conditioner last in the Chicago area?
Twelve to fifteen years is typical for a maintained central system. Humid summers load the system, and winter freeze-thaw cycles are hard on the outdoor unit. Annual maintenance is the biggest factor in reaching the top of that range.
How often should my AC be serviced?
Once a year, in spring before the first real heat. A tune-up catches low refrigerant, a weak capacitor, a clogged drain or a dirty coil before they strand you. About our 40-point AC tune-up.
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
The usual causes are a refrigerant leak, a frozen or dirty evaporator coil, or a failing compressor. A clogged filter or blocked drain can do the same. Turn the system off, set the fan to ON to help a frozen coil thaw, and call for a diagnosis. What to do when your AC freezes up.
