Like many American cities, many neighborhoods in and around Chicago struggle with poor water quality. Given the age of municipal pipes, lead contamination is particularly concerning. A 2018 Chicago Tribune report found that 30% of sampled homes had lead levels above 5 parts-per-billion. Health care professionals and researchers agree: there is no such thing as ‘safe’ levels of lead exposure. Lead can make adults sick and impair the proper growth and development of children.
