Why you should make the switch to a new Carrier air conditioner

Earlier this summer, we outlined some of the reasons you should change out your old, failing air conditioner for a newer model. However, here’s something else to consider: you should switch to a new Carrier air conditioner. As one of the world’s most-trusted names in indoor comfort, Carrier is the right system, and King is the right team to install it.

Give us a call to schedule a free in-home estimate on a new Carrier system. During this estimate, we’ll help you find the right air conditioner for your home and your family’s cooling needs.

Why Carrier?

Carrier is one of the world’s oldest and most-trusted cooling companies. There’s a reason for that, actually: their namesake Willis Carrier practically invented the first air conditioner all the way back in 1902.

Most companies would just ride those credentials all the way to today, but the incredible thing is that Carrier has continued to innovate, invent, and establish themselves as one of the top HVAC manufacturers in the world. Today, they’re at the cutting-edge of sustainability, energy-efficiency, quiet design, and a number of other categories.

What makes a new Carrier air conditioner different?

Carrier’s whole line of air conditioners is built to impress. First, these systems are balanced, providing equal parts energy-efficiency, cooling performance, and quiet design. This results in a happier, cooler home, without the huge energy bills in the summer. Believe us: with the heat and humidity here in Chicagoland, you want to cut right through that and have a comfortable home.

Perhaps these hallmark qualities of a great Carrier air conditioner are best seen in the Infinity® 20 Air Conditioner with Greenspeed® Intelligence. Arguably one of the most efficient air conditioners available today, this system packs a cooling punch. It’s the top-of-the-class.

Why Carrier versus other brands?

Ask your neighbors: chances are that the system they trust to cool their home is a Carrier. That’s because generations of Americans have turned to Carrier for superior comfort and cooling. Carrier has long been focused on saving people money on energy bills while still providing high-quality systems.

Here’s another great reason to choose a Carrier: King’s professional AC installation experts can help you install your new system right. After all, an air conditioner is only as good as the installation, and our NATE-certified techs have the know-how and training to make sure your air conditioner is good to go and ready to start cooling your home.

What NATE-certified means (and why you should choose King)

When you need AC repair this summer, you want to hire the best to work on your system. In this blog, we’ll explain why NATE-certified techs are the best the HVAC industry has to offer, and why King hires experienced professionals to work in your home.

To schedule cooling services from King, contact us today. Or, give us a call at (708) 687-6898.

We Employ NATE Certified TechniciansWhat is NATE-certification, anyway?

The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) program is the nation’s premier training, certification, and resource center for HVAC companies.

Founded in 1997 by a coalition of HVAC and service companies, NATE has helped improve customer satisfaction rates; reduce the return of improperly installed equipment; and more. Basically, NATE has changed the game.

Through NATE, HVAC technicians are not only trained, but they’re also thoroughly tested and vetted to determine whether or not they’re ready to go out into the field. NATE-certified technicians represent the pinnacle of the industry, and that’s why King Heating, Cooling & Plumbing hires them.

Why does being certified matter?

Your air conditioner and furnace are advanced, complex machines. They need a professional inspecting, repairing, or installing them. After all, you wouldn’t want just anyone handling your auto repair. The same thing goes for your HVAC units.

However, some HVAC businesses like to save money and cut corners by hiring techs who are inexperienced. That basically means that, at best, they’re learning on the job—with your air conditioner as the training exercise. Yikes! At worst, they could be completely out of their depth and making major mistakes.

At King, we recommend only have professional, experienced technicians inspect or repair your HVAC units. Our NATE-certified techs give you the peace of mind of knowing that you don’t have some random guy working on your system. Instead, you have a true, trained professional.

Why trust King?

King Heating, Cooling & Plumbing has been serving the communities of Oak Forest, Orland Park, Frankfort, and Joliet since 1968. We’re a full-service HVAC business that is locally trusted: we’re a seven-time winner of the Chicago Tribune’s “Best of Chicago’s Southland” award.

Here are 5 important facts about air conditioning filters

5 Important Facts about Air Conditioning Filters Almost every home in the United States has an air conditioning unit. For most people, it is an absolute necessity. However, some people tend to forget that the air conditioner is a mechanical device and don’t pay any attention to its regular maintenance and repair needs.

Given the high cost and expenses incurred in operating the unit, it’s important that you keep the unit serviced regularly.

An important part of the air conditioner is the filter. It prevents dirt from getting inside the system and doing major damage to the unit. Knowing more about the air filter will help in making the right decision regarding the unit. Here are some important facts that you should know about air conditioning filters.

1. Not all air filters are the same

Some people presume that only one type of filter is installed in the air conditioner. The reality is that there are many sizes and types of filters. Some are reusable after cleaning while others are for one-time use only. The filters have different ratings and prices. A professional technician can tell you about the recommended filter for your air conditioner.

2. You need to inspect your air filter regularly

An air filter collects dirt and dust over time and therefore must be cleaned regularly. The EPA recommends that you inspect your AC filter at least every 3 months. In case you reside in a dusty area, or there are pets or children inside the house, you should consider getting the filter inspected every month. Regular inspection will ensure that a clogged filter won’t result in damage to the unit.

3. Bigger is not always better

Keep in mind that only a specific size of filter will be suitable for an air conditioner. Going out and buying the biggest filter is not recommended. Installing a wrong size of air filter will result in inefficient filtering of the dust particles. This will result in accelerated wear-and-tear on the system. Again, a professional technician will guide you in buying the right size of filter.

4. Don’t always just default to the highest rating

Every air conditioner requires a filter with a particular Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating. Knowing that the highest rating is 16, some people buy the highest-rated filter. But the fact is that a filter with a higher-than-required filter might actually restrict air flow. This will strain the air conditioner and may cause damage to the system. That brings us to our final thing to consider…

5. Let a professional do the work

Filters should be installed, inspected, and cleaned by an experienced technician. Some people, in order to save money, try to clean the filter by vacuuming it. Others try to wash the filter in the washing machine. However, DIY cleaning often damages the filter. An experienced technician has the required tools and equipment to clean the filter safely.

The professional will also thoroughly clean the filter to prevent the buildup of bacteria and mold. These can enter the rooms through the vents thereby posing a health risk to the household.

5 signs that you need a new air conditioner

Install a New Air ConditionerTrying to decide whether you should repair your older air conditioner or get a new air conditioner? In this blog post, we’ll work through five signs that it’s time to have King install a new unit.

Keeping your air conditioner in working order

Air conditioners must be kept in good condition so that they can properly cool the rooms when the temperatures start to rise. Proper maintenance of your air conditioner will ensure that it lives a longer, more energy-efficient life.

That being said, sometimes air conditioners get to the point when they need to be replaced.

Determining when to replace your air conditioner is not an exact science. There are no set rules that can tell you when it’s time to replace the air conditioning unit. Having said that, here are five tell-tale signs that indicate that you need to call King for a free in-home AC installation estimate.

1. Consider the age of the air conditioner

The fact is that older air conditioners are less efficient than newer, current models. According to Energy Star, you should consider replacing your air conditioner if it is more than 10 years old, and you should seriously consider replacing the air conditioner if it’s more than 15 years old—as this is the average lifespan of most cooling devices.

2. Apply the $5,000 rule

Some experts recommend using the $5,000 rule to consider whether you should replace the unit. Just multiply the age of the cooling device with the repair cost. If the amount is more than $5,000, you should consider replacing the unit. Otherwise, it’s better to repair the unit.

For instance, if your air conditioner is 8 years old and the repair cost comes to around $400, that equals $3,200. You should have King repair the air conditioner. However, if the repair costs $700 for the same air conditioner, it equals $5,600 and so you should consider having King replace the air conditioner with a new one.

3. Think about the frequency of repairs

Consider whether the air conditioner requires frequent repairs. If the answer is “yes,” you should consider replacing the air conditioner. Otherwise, it’s best to repair the equipment.

You should particularly consider replacing the system if the repair costs are more than 50 percent of the price of a new air conditioner. Consult with the air conditioning technicians at King to find out how much repairs will cost, as well as the cost of the a system. From there, you can make an appropriate decision.

4. Replace an air conditioner that requires R-22

Older air conditioners generally require R-22 refrigerant, which is known to cause great damage to the environment. If your air conditioner uses this refrigerant, you should consider replacing it with a new one.

Another reason for replacing the air conditioner with a one that doesn’t use R-22 is that the price of this refrigerant has increased considerably. In addition, the production of the refrigerant is slated to end in 2020. So, it’s best to take action early and replace the air conditioner.

5. Consider the energy efficiency of the air conditioner (and the energy savings of a new air conditioner)

A new air conditioner is highly energy efficient, resulting in lower energy bills. Also, many states offer tax credits to the homeowners that purchase highly energy-efficient systems. So, you should consider replacing the unit if it will save you money in the form of lower bills and tax incentives.

Deciding between furnace repair versus replacement

It’s a cold winter night here in the communities south of Chicago. Snow, wind, sleet—we go through it all each winter. Now, your 15-year-old furnace just died, and you’re faced with a crucial decision: do you have the NATE-certified techs at King Heating, Cooling & Plumbing repair your furnace, or do you replace it with a new one? For many homeowners, the furnace repair versus replacement debate is inevitable. But, you don’t have to go it alone.

That’s because King is here for you. We’re heating experts serving Orland Park, Joliet, and Oak Lawn, and we help homeowners with their heating needs—all winter long. We can help you decide between furnace repair versus replacement, and we can offer 24/7 emergency repair service. The techs at King also install new furnaces.

furnace repair versus replacementHow do you decide between furnace repair versus replacement?

First, a word of caution: every furnace and heating system is different, and is in a different situation. This blog post makes generalities about all furnaces, but, as the saying goes, your mileage may vary. The best way to make a decision about furnace repair versus replacement is to give King a call. We’ll send out one of our NATE-certified, expert technicians to inspect your furnace and give you our honest assessment of whether you should have us repair it or have it replaced.

However, if you’re still having trouble making your decision, there’s a few things you should consider.

  • Energy Costs: It’s a well-known fact that the older the furnace is, the less energy efficient it is. After all, your furnace has run non-stop for multiple Chicago winters in a row, and all that wear-and-tear means that things don’t work like they did when the equipment was new. If you choose to have King repair your old furnace, you may be just having it limp along at higher energy costs than you would have with a new furnace. Over time, those costs can add up.
  • Repair Costs: Along with being less energy efficient, older furnaces are more prone to breakdowns as parts wear down and stop functioning. While a furnace tune-up from King can help you avoid some problems, breakdowns will only increase in likelihood as your furnace enters its second or third decade of life. Plus, any manufacturer’s warranty you had has probably expired. If repair costs are adding up, consider upgrading to a new furnace.
  • Home Comfort: Your home’s comfort matters—after all, why even have a furnace if it’s not going to keep you and your family toasty and warm throughout the whole winter? However, an older furnace is going to struggle in this regard, too. On the average, the older a furnace gets, the greater the decline in heating performance. The first symptom is hot and cold spots in the home. A young furnace is much better at keeping a consistent temperature. If you’re debating between furnace repair versus replacement, it’s important to consider your comfort.

For more signs that it’s time to replace your furnace, check out this guide from Energy Star.

Fall is the perfect time for a furnace upgrade

It’s fall here in Chicago’s South Side, and the leaves are beginning to change. Soon, they’ll fall, and winter will officially be here. If you’re relying on an aging furnace to get you through the coldest months of the year, you might be in for a cold awakening when it stops working. If your furnace is between 10-20 years old, fall might be a good time to think about a furnace upgrade.

In this blog post, we’ll review how a new furnace from King Heating, Cooling & Plumbing will help you save money on energy, reduce the likelihood of a breakdown, and increase your long-term savings. To get started on your furnace installation, call King at (708) 687-6898 or get in contact with us today.

Get the best possible energy savings

With an emphasis on energy-efficient design, the furnaces manufactured by Carrier today use far less energy than their predecessors 10-20 years ago. Part of this trend is driven by consumers: as energy prices have increased, the demand for furnaces (and air conditioners) that use less electricity or gas has skyrocketed. Thanks to the gains made in the past two decades, a furnace upgrade today could lead to significant savings on your winter energy bills.

Unfortunately, older furnaces hurt your energy efficiency on two fronts. In addition to not having the technology that modern heating systems do, furnaces also become less efficient as they age, due to worn parts and the general wear of decades of near-constant use for entire seasons. If you have an aging system and you’ve noticed that your energy bills have been spiking out of control, it might be time to give King a call about a furnace upgrade.

Head into winter with a reliable system

No one wants their furnace failing in the middle of a Chicago snowstorm, or a chilly, windy night. You, your home, and your family relies on your furnace for your winter safety and home comfort. If your furnace is older than 10 years old, you should consider replacing it. If it’s between 15 and 20 years old, you’re running the risk that it could breakdown this winter, or die altogether.

Reliable heating isn’t just an issue of comfort. It’s also an issue of costs. If you have to have your furnace regularly repaired, those costs can add up over time. This means that every winter you delay replacing your heating system with a furnace upgrade from King, you’re throwing money at a system that might not be around the following season.

Many people don’t think about the ways in which an older furnace—although already something you own—can cost them money. If you’ve been debating getting a new furnace upgrade, you should take spending more on energy and repairs with an older heating system into account.

Furnace Upgrade ChicagoSave even more

Your furnace upgrade will save you on energy costs and may keep you from paying for heating repairs this winter, but it can also save you in other ways. At King, we regularly offer seasonal specials on our furnace upgrade and installation service. If you don’t see a special here, be sure to check back.

Upgrading from a low-efficiency system to a high-efficiency furnace may qualify you for several state, federal, and utility rebates through Carrier. You can use this system to search by zip code for rebates available in your area. If you have questions about whether you qualify for a rebate or how to redeem one, give King a call. Our team would love to help you out.

One final way to save? Your new Carrier furnace may come with a new, 10-year manufacturer’s warranty that offers forms of coverage for parts and the functions of the system. This warranty protects you in the event of a furnace breakdown, and is—in effect—a great way to save money. Your aging furnace likely had a warranty that has long since expired, so a furnace upgrade from King can provide you with this incomparable peace of mind.

When to consider buying a new hot water heater

When you own a home or condo, there’s a lot to worry about. There’s your appliances, your roof, your backyard, your garage door—and that’s just the home maintenance, nevermind your actual life, which includes work, play, and spending time with your family. Here’s probably what you’re not giving much thought to: your home’s water heater, or your plumbing in general.

Like your air conditioner and furnace, your hot water heater is almost always running and keeping your home comfortable, yet it’s easy to overlook because it just sits there and does its job, year-after-year, for years to come. While it’s nice to have one less thing to worry about, your water heater won’t last forever, and you’ll need to pay some attention to it, especially as it begins to age. In this blog post, we’ll review situations in which you should consider purchasing a new hot water heater from the professionals at King.

Need a new hot water heater?Has your water heater been failing?

This is the number one reason people upgrade to a new hot water heater. After all, we push most buying decisions until the point where we need to replace something, and a water heater that is no longer working is a powerful incentive to upgrade.

However, there are instances in which getting a new water heater prior to your old one failing make sense. For example, if your water heater becomes incapable of raising your water temperature above a certain level, or if you’ve noticed that the stored hot water it produces has noticeably diminished, preventing you and your family from getting ready in the morning.

Alternatively, you may notice small leaks or condensation on the outside of the system. While not yet at the crisis level of the system bursting, any moisture leak from the system means that it’s time to call the professionals at King Heating & Cooling for a replacement hot water heater. Don’t ignore the signs of hot water heater failure and be stuck without hot water—or, worse, a flooded home.

Are your energy costs skyrocketing?

As a general rule, the equipment manufactured today—whether we’re talking about hot water heaters, air conditioners, or furnaces—is more energy efficient than preceding models. Part of that is improved materials and technology, while some of that is owed to an increased emphasis on preserving energy. Whether your water heater uses gas or electricity, an older system is less likely to be conserving energy in your home. This inefficiency can add up: the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that water heaters account for 17% of residential energy use on average.

The good news is that, by upgrading to a new hot water heater, you can save on your monthly energy bills. Generally speaking, gas systems are more energy saving than electric ones, so be sure to ask King about your options if you have gas lines in your home. No matter what system you choose, it’s going to be more efficient than the older system that you’re replacing.

Is your current water heater nearing the end of its lifespan?

Hot water heaters typically last between 10 and 12 years, although some can live well beyond that. Generally, though, your water heater’s second decade of life will be its last, and you should at least be prepared to think about replacement during that time. That’s something King can help with. We have a wide selection of new hot water heaters.

Ready to upgrade to a new hot water heater?

King has experienced plumbers and technicians who have the training needed to install new hot water heaters that work great and save you money on your monthly energy bills. If you’re looking for a new hot water heater in South Side Chicago, turn to the professionals at King. Contact us online or reach us by calling 708-687-6898.

When do I need to replace my current AC system?

Here’s a situation: your current air conditioner has just stopped working, and you’ll need to have it repaired as soon as possible. Right? Or, is it a better deal to just purchase a new air conditioning unit?

AC Repair or ReplacementEvery situation is different. However, there are some things you can think about before making your decision and calling King Heating and Cooling. We’re the South Side’s HVAC experts, and our industry-certified technicians can help you decide between replacement and repair.

When to consider AC repair

  • If your system still has life ahead of it: If your air conditioner is less than ten years old, it may not be time to throw in the towel just yet. Most cared-for AC systems can last past 15 years, so getting rid of your current system may not be as appealing if it hasn’t reached the peak of its lifespan.
  • If the repair is a one-off affair: If this repair is a one-time thing that isn’t likely to become a recurring issue, it might be worth fixing the system. When you have a professional from King Heating and Cooling look over your system, be sure to ask them what they think. If they indicate that there’s other damage that could cause further breakdowns, that should probably come into your decision-making process.
  • If you can get professional help for a great price: Before you start adding up the price of repairs on the calculator, consider that King Heating and Cooling offers regular specials and coupons for our services that may make a repair far more feasible.
  • If you like your air conditioner: This is more important than most people think. If you really like the cooling power of your air conditioner and your current electricity bills, it makes sense to put the money into the system to keep it running. Of course, the opposite may be true. Again, every cooling situation is different. If you’re struggling to weigh the positives and negatives, ask the professionals.

When to consider AC replacement

  • If the price is right: It’s true for repairs, and it’s true for new air conditioning systems, as well. King Heating and Cooling regularly offers special deals on new AC installations, and we can match you to the right system for your cooling needs. If the cost of your repair even begins to approach the cost of a new system, don’t hesitate to opt for the new air conditioner. You may even make up the cost gap in energy savings!
  • If you need something more efficient: Nevermind the system breaking. Even before your old air conditioner stopped working, it was leading to some eye-popping electricity bills. For an older system, there’s only so much that regular maintenance can do. Eventually, a new system may make sense on the grounds of energy efficiency alone.
  • You want to boost your home’s resale value: Even if you’re not planning on selling your home right now, a new air conditioner can increase your home’s value if you do have to move. It could even be the difference between making a sale or just missing out.

No matter what you decide, King can help
